What We Do...
SafeHouse Denver supports survivors of domestic violence with a full scope of care including emergency shelter, extended stay program, 24hour crisis line and counseling center.
In the details...
Melanie arrived at the SafeHouse Denver Emergency Shelter with seven-year-old Alex, as they fled her emotionally and physically abusive husband. Although Alex had witnessed multiple physical assaults on his mom, the last straw was when he had to call 911 to get help. Melanie made the hard decision to leave their home and everyone she knew. It was time, she decided, to find somewhere safe to heal from the abuse and let Alex be a kid again.
While at the Shelter, Melanie and Alex spent many hours with their Family Advocate. In addition to safe shelter and basic necessities, they received one on one support, group counseling, and education sessions. The staff fondly remembers little Alex being a strong advocate for himself, marching to the office whenever he had a question.
SafeHouse Denver supported Melanie in her custody hearings for Alex, helped her apply for and secure stable housing, and gave her the space she needed to begin to heal from years of abuse.
