What We Do...
Provides hungry people access to fresh, nutritious food, along with education, self-sufficiency programming, and health services to address root causes of hunger and improve well-being.
In the details...
My name is George and I’m a veteran. I moved to Denver several years ago to be near my sick brother. I worked for awhile but lost my job and couldn’t afford rent. My military records were lost in a fire, so I couldn’t get benefits. I ended up living under bridges and dumpster-diving to eat.
I was homeless for four years before someone recommended Metro Caring. They gave me fresh foods I could eat on the street. They helped me get my military ID to apply for veterans’ benefits. They got me a nice suit and shoes to apply for jobs. They helped me find my identity.
Metro Caring treated me like family. Now I’ve gone back to school to get my degree. I started volunteering because I wanted to pay forward the help I received. I listen to people’s story and tell them I was in the same place and that it will get better. Now I’ve got more in my life than I’ve ever had.
