In the details...
When Darryl was 19 years old, he was an electrician and studying to become a Journeyman. But suddenly and drastically, his life changed: his spine was shattered when he was shot in the neck during a road-rage incident. These events resulted in quadriplegia; he was unable to accomplish even simple tasks. He could not be left alone - he needed someone with him at all times in order to function. Enter “Rio”…with service dog Rio at his side, Darryl was able to complete tasks that require arms and hands. After partnering with his mobility service dog, Darryl regained the confidence to ride public transportation and work in an office. He recently bought a van and is learning to drive again for the first time in 25 years. After 10 years working together, Rio has retired and CaPR has partnered Darryl with his second canine partner, Nacho, who allows him to continue to live independently.
